Edward Matesevic

Edward S. “Eddie” Matesevic, age 96, of Joliet, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Lightways Hospice with his family by his side.

Born February 5, 1925 in Joliet, Eddie was one of twelve children born to John V. and Dora (Née Bratina) Matesevic.  Eddie married Olga Furiel on May 29, 1948 at St. Mary Nativity Church and together, they raised six amazing children.

Throughout his career, Eddie worked for Will County Produce, United States Steel and retired from Joliet Township West High School after 35+ years as a dedicated maintenance man.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, a member of the VFW Cantigny Post #367 and the Raven’s Club.

In his free time, Eddie liked carpentry and brick work, which included remodeling & adding to his home and making small furniture pieces. He enjoyed dancing, singing, working on jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid card player, spending many hours with his family playing, pinochle, euchre, sets & runs and dominos. He enjoyed retirement as a true “dumpster diver”, bringing home various treasures.

Survivors include his children; Diana (Harvey Seaborg) Matesevic, Carolyn (the late Rex) Wilson, Marianne (Bill) Miller, Marlene Matesevic, Frank Matesevic and Lenny Matesevic; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Eddie was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 69 years, Olga C. Matesevic (2017); parents, John and Dora Matesevic; brothers, Anthony, John, Nicholas, Frank and Michael Matesevic; sisters, Anna Strusa-Markovich, Catherine (Joseph) Tomac, Mary Lou (Al) Ballun, Dorothy (Richard) Unmisig and Delores (Joseph) Janes.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, Joliet, IL 60435.  Prayers will follow at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, then proceeding to Holy Cross Catholic Church, for a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m., Rev.
