Age 79 of Crest Hill, IL, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle against lung cancer on May 13, 2025, at Lightways Hospice Serious Illness and Care, with his family at his side.
Born March 4, 1946, in Joliet, John was a son of John G., Sr. and Genevieve (Née Dwyer) Uremovic.
John attended St. Dennis Grade School in Lockport, Joliet Catholic High, (Class of 1964). John proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was a Vietnam War veteran. He married Cecelia M. Olejniczak on September 21, 1968, in St. Anne Catholic Church, Crest Hill.
In his young years, John worked at the family business, Little John’s Pizza in Lockport. He dedicated his career to working as a Fuel Handling Supervisor at the Dresden Power Plant, retiring after many years of loyal and committed service.
John was nothing if not consistent — a true creature of habit. He had a deep love for Frank Sinatra, a lifelong loyalty to the White Sox (despite the emotional toll), a baffling dedication to Tab, and a standing date with Turner Classic Movies.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Cecelia M. Uremovic; devoted daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Michael Bima; grandchildren, Mallory (fiancé Eric Milaicki) Dominic, Samuel and Joseph Bima; great-granddaughter, Amelia Milaicki; sister, Maryann Uremovic; sister-in-law, Jeannie Uremovic; nephew, James (Stacey) Uremovic; nieces, Kathleen (Vic) Oskvarek and Mary (Sean) Smith; numerous great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John G., Sr. and Genevieve Uremovic; brother, Jim Uremovic; nephew, Matthew Uremovic; and his in-laws, Joseph (Vera) Olejniczak.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, Joliet, IL 60435. Prayers will follow on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 9:15 a.m., then processing to St. Ambrose & St. Anne Catholic Church, 1705 Burry Circle Drive, Crest Hill, IL, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Anthony Nyamai officiating.
John will be laid to rest at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Cemetery, Crest Hill, following United States Navy honors and a committal service.
Preferred memorials in John’s memory would be mass intentions. The family would like to thank the staff of Rush Hospital and Lightways Hospice for their dedicated service and care for John.
