Raymond F. “Ray” Shields, Sr.
Age 92 of Crest Hill, IL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
Born December 23, 1928 in Joliet, Ray was a son of John and Elizabeth (Née McGuckin) Shields. He was a lifelong Joliet area resident, a graduate of Catholic High, Class of 1944 and married Corinne L. Joutras on June 17, 1950, at St. Raymond Catholic Church (Cathedral of St. Raymond) in Joliet.
He was retired from Union Oil Company, Romeoville, IL after 35 years of dedicated service.
Ray was a longtime member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Joliet Elks #296, Loyal Order of the Moose #300, the Old Timers Baseball Association, Joliet Rivals Club and an avid Nascar Racing fan.
In his free time, he enjoyed traveling with Corky to Hayward, Wisconsin fishing on the Chippewa flowage and Acapulco.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Corinne L. “Corky” (Née Joutras) Shields, children; Raymond F. (Sandy) Shields, Jr., Peggy (Pat) Guffey, Deb (Bill) Rathbun and Michael (Mary Ann Weiner) Shields, grandchildren; Trisha (Chad) Simpson, Lisa (Louie) Cardwell, Michelle (Jason) Rodeghero, Grant (Jessica) Shields, Jake Shields, Jennifer (Dave Goldstein) Rathbun, Kenneth (Jennifer) Rathbun, Brittany (Zack) Forbing and Stephanie Shields, fifteen great-grandchildren, sister; Lillian (late Raymond) Kezerle, and sisters-in-law; Marilyn Rakar and Gerry Plese.
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; John and Elizabeth Shields, sisters; Kathleen Louis L. (late Stephen) Popovich and Margaret Shields, brother; John (late Mary Earlene) Shields, mother and father-in-law; Amos and Loretta Joutras and brothers-in-law; Louis (late Betty Joutras-Brewer) Joutras, Gene Rakar and Luke Plese.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1705 Burry Circle Drive, Crest Hill, IL on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 10:00 a.m., Rev Anthony Nyamai officiating.
Facemasks are required in Church. There will be no services at the funeral home.
